  • Images show the famous Skyrail experience, and the pristine beach at Palm Cove.

Whether you are planning an action packed holiday or a leisurely laid-back vacation, the beaches also offer a range of activities to suit all tastes.

Holloways Beach

Machans Beach is the first beach heading north out of Cairns. The next turn-off from Captain Cook Highway is Holloways Beach. It has modern holiday apartments and Bed & Breakfast accommodation. Facilities and activities include canoeing, fishing, golfing, walking, swimming and sailing.

Smithfield and Yorkeys Knob

The suburb of Smithfield serves as a main centre for the Northern Beaches. It is located between Yorkeys’s Knob and Trinity Park, about 20 minutes north along the Highway. Smithfield Shopping Centre is modern and has a large number of specialty stores, supermarkets, cafes, nearby bistro and a whole lot more.

From Smithfield you can continue along the Captain Cook Highway to Palm Cove and Port Douglas, or take the Kennedy Highway to Kuranda and the Hinterland. Alternatively, head down Yorkeys Knob Rd for a relaxing experience at Yorkeys Knob Beach.

Yorkeys Knob Beach is a safe swimming beach with a lifeguard present. It has all the modern accommodation and facilities such as restaurants, water sports and other sporting activities along with a fantastic golf course. The local shopping centre provides handy access to a small supermarket, liquor shop, bakery, take-away and eat in food shops, beauticians and hair salons. Yorkeys"s Knob has an international marina that can shelter up to 80 boats, and the boat club features a bistro and breathtaking views of the Coral Sea.

Skyrail - a Beautiful Rainforest Experience

Skyrail’s Caravonica Terminal is located just before Smithfield Shopping Centre on the Captain Cook Highway. You can drive yourself or utilise the Skyrail Coach Transfer service.

A Skyrail Experience to Kuranda will take approximately 1½ hours one way, or 2-2½ hours return. Gliding just metres above the rainforest canopy in comfortable six-person gondola cabins, the Skyrail journey immerses you in an intimate rainforest experience where you’ll see, hear, smell and become part of the tropical rainforest environment.

A Skyrail journey may be combined with a journey on the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway. Built over 100 years ago this historic train winds its way through the tropical mountain ranges from Cairns to Kuranda. The train station is conveniently located adjacent to Skyrail’s Kuranda Terminal.

Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park

Situated on 25 acres of land owned by the Tjapukai people at Caravonica near Smithfield, Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park is a stunning theatrical interpretation of Aboriginal culture from the beginning of time into the future.

Tjapukai’s show business has become the most awarded Aboriginal cultural attraction in Australia and is credited with enhancing reconciliation locally, nationally and internationally.

Tjapukai showcases the culture of the rainforest people of Tropical North Queensland.

Seven separate arenas allow visitors to experience every facet of their culture - from the provocative History Theatre to the inspiring Creation Theatre, and the original Dance Theatre. Visitors can also learn didgeridoo playing and boomerang throwing.
