The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, composed of 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands that stretch for more than 2,500 kilometres off the coast of Queensland in north east Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is of course Queensland's and Australia's No 1 tourist attraction, of which a large part is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The park is managed, in partnership with the Government of Queensland, to ensure that it is understood and used in a sustainable manner. Approximately two million people visit the Great Barrier Reef each year, and it has been estimated that tourism related to the Great Barrier Reef generates revenue of over AUD 4 - 5 billion annually. The most significant threat to the status of the Great Barrier Reef is climate change, comprising chiefly of global warming and the El Niño effect. Many of the corals of the Great Barrier Reef are currently living at the upper edge of their temperature tolerance.
Queensland is the second largest state in Australia. Its capital is Brisbane with a population of about 1.5 million. The population of Queensland is nearly 3.7 million. Queensland offer countless places to visit. Mention the Gold Coast and immediately you think of stunning beaches, exciting theme parks, sun-kissed locals and a sophisticated life style. The Gold Coast truly offers something for everyone. The Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane offers a relaxed atmosphere with a beauty that will captivate you. More than half of Queensland lies above the Tropic of Capricorn. The coastline is magic, with endless sandy beaches, national parks and the lush tropical rainforests of the tropics. The climate is of course very pleasant (average summer temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius, average winter temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius), and Queenslanders enjoy more winter sunshine and warmth than most other Australian states.
